Twitter Verification Purge: Beyonce, Gaga, and Blackpink Among Celebs Stripped of Blue Checkmarks

On Thursday, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian, and the K-pop group BLACKPINK all had their blue checks revoked from their official Twitter accounts. Elon declared his intention to remove the legacy blue checkmarks earlier this month, designating April 20 as the date for the purge. However, many were skeptical if the social media platform would follow through, and now the time of reckoning has arrived.

For years, Twitter's blue checkmarks were highly sought-after, serving as the platform's official verification system to distinguish prominent public figures from ordinary users. After acquiring Twitter for $44 billion, Elon chose to take a different approach, charging individuals $8 per month for subscriptions that include blue checkmarks while phasing out the legacy ones.

Numerous celebrities have spoken out against Elon's policy, including LeBron James, who initially refused to pay for a blue checkmark but later reversed course.

In the entertainment industry and throughout the nation, there is a sense that Twitter's blue checkmark exodus could inspire a "cool kids" movement among unverified users
